New Grants to Turbocharge Visitor Experiences

Territory tourism-related operations have been awarded more than $1.5 million in grants to provide a better experience for visitors and boost their business, through the Territory Labor Government’s record $103 million Turbocharging Tourism stimulus package.

Minister for Tourism and Culture Lauren Moss announced the Darwin-based recipients of grants today, adding that they would also create local jobs for tradies.

“We want to make sure we send visitors away raving about their Territory experience.  The Government’s Visitor Experience Enhancement Program, a Turbocharging Tourism initiative, will help local businesses to take their existing offerings to the next level so visitors are excited to share their experience online and with family and friends,” Ms Moss said.

“We have had a huge response from tourism and hospitality operators to the program, with a total of 58 projects funded across the Territory, worth more than $1.5 million.

“The works will also be a welcome boost for local tradies.”

Streeter Pearl Lugger Cruises is one local business to benefit from the program.  Owner/operator Chris Naden will use his grant to install an air-conditioning system to the wheelhouse, galley and accommodation area of the 65ft, 1959 pearling lugger Streeter, which has been providing sunset cruises in the Darwin Harbour since 2006.

Mr Naden said the air-conditioning on the lugger will significantly increase visitor appeal and increase visitor numbers.

“The upgrade allows the Streeter to expand its months of operation into the wet season, expand our product to offer overnight stays in air-conditioned sleeping quarters as well as appeal to larger group charters,” Mr Naden said.

A number of Darwin restaurants and food outlets will also benefit from the Visitor Experience Enhancement program including:

Round 2 of the program opens on 1 July 2018 with one-off funding up to $50,000 (ex GST) available per business. Projects from Round 2 need to be completed by 30 June 2019.
