Welcoming More Indigenous Police Officers

Nine Aboriginal Community Police Officers have taken up the challenge to become NT Police constables.

The NT Police Minister Paul Henderson attended the graduation of Transitional Aboriginal Community Police (ACPO) Squad 102 in Darwin this evening.

“The transition program is a great initiative that opens up employment prospects and opportunities for a career in the wider police force,” he said.

“These nine men and women have already graduated and worked as Aboriginal Community Police Officers.

“I thank them for their commitment in taking the next step and improving their skills to serve our community as constables.

“We already have 29 Indigenous officers and Auxiliaries – these nine will make it 38. The NT Police Force also has 71 Aboriginal Community Police Officers based around the Territory, with another 9 in training.

“Since 2003, we’ve doubled the number of ACPOs in our police force, which is a great step forward but I’d certainly like to see an increase in both the number of Indigenous ACPOs and fully authorised officers to be more reflective of our population.”

Mr Henderson said the nine new probationary constables underwent 19 weeks of training and would be stationed in the following areas:

Other police squads in training and due to graduate this year include a recruit squad of 18 members; an auxiliary squad of 14 and an ACPO squad of 9.
