Paul Henderson MINISTER FOR POLICE FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES |
Chief Minister Paul Henderson today told the Northern Territory Police Association National Conference in
“We have recruited more Police than any Government in the Territory’s history – and we’ll continue to get more Police on the beat,” Mr Henderson said.
“This financial year we again handed down a record budget to police - $279 million - an increase of 104% since 2001.
“We now have over 1257 police serving in the force with 333 more police officers in place than we had in 2003.
“There are now 274 more sworn officers at the constable and above level than there were in 2003.
“Another 11 squads will graduate this financial year which will deliver 74 constables, 9 ACPOS and 18 police auxiliaries into the force.
“The recent decision to postpone a recruitment squad reflects how successful police recruitment and retention strategies have been over the past year.
“The rate of growth of the force, including the new funding initiatives, has far exceeded anticipated separation rates – attrition is at just 3.8%.
“Also, the number of former NT Police Officers who have re-enlisted is encouraging with 14 officers being reappointed last financial year.
“All this means we are well advanced in our 2 year Safer Streets program which is delivering an additional 60 funded positions and police to patrol our suburbs.
“Thirty-five of these positions have been delivered and we are ahead of schedule for the remaining 25 positions.”
