TERRY MILLS - CHIEF MINISTER
Chief Minister Terry Mills has today announced that the Wanguri by-election will be held on Saturday February 16th.
The announcement follows the formal resignation of Paul Henderson this morning.
“Mr Henderson’s resignation is effective at the close of business today and I am acting on his resignation,” Mr Mills said.
“I am disappointed that the timing of Mr Henderson’s resignation has left the people of Wanguri in the lurch, and ensured that they will not be represented by anyone at the first parliamentary sittings of the year which begin on February 12th.
“The people of Wanguri deserve better and this is why I have decided to hold the bi-election at the earliest opportunity.
“I have contacted the Electoral Commission and indicated that I will seek a meeting with the Administrator so that a writ for the Wanguri by-election can be issued on Monday.
“The Country Liberals have pre-selected Rhianna Harker to stand at the by-election, as she did a superb job in the August General Election recording an 8 per cent swing against Mr Henderson, the then Chief Minister.
“I know Rhianna earned the respect of the community during that campaign, where she showed great tenacity and commitment.
“Rhianna is an excellent candidate and is perfectly placed to serve the best interests of the people of Wanguri if elected on February 16th.”
Ms Harker said Wanguri residents now had an opportunity to elect someone who could provide a strong voice in Government.
“I will stand up for the residents of Wanguri first and foremost and make sure their issues are front and centre in the minds of the Mills Government,” Ms Harker said.
